Ernest Trova’s GOX No. 3, 1974, comprised of jumbled geometric cut-outs is aggressive in tone with a rigid repetition of active angular forms. The negative shapes teeter precariously while confined within the solidity of the steel framework. GOX stands for GeOmetric eXercise, and represents Trova’s ongoing dedication to work in a series. Although the GOX pieces were a break in Trova’s evolving figurative studies, as he became more interested in geometry he continually searched for the synthesis of the figurative and the abstract.
This work was part of a large gift by Ernest Trova to St. Louis County Parks in 1976 that helped launch Laumeier Sculpture Park.
