Walter Dusenbery, Muro, 1975

red travertine

Walter Dusenbery’s Muro, 1975, is a minimally carved travertine that sits calmly with a subtle poise. The variations between the smooth polished surfaces and the rough unfinished textures alternate through an oval-shaped design. Its peaceful presence eludes the many years Dusenbery spent mastering the techniques used to create the surface.  Referencing ancient architecture, Dusenbery painstakingly hand-chiseled the smooth surface while the rough texture was machine-cut. The red color of the travertine and the gray stone base signify Dusenbery’s preferred material and his home in Pietrasanta, Italy, where for centuries, sculptors such as Michelangelo have sought material from the town’s quarries.
