Create A Memory Box

Laumeier's current exhibition Mark Dion: Follies may be temporarily closed, but you can find inspiration in Dion’s The Memory Box to create your own version at home! The Memory Box is a shed filled with dozens of keepsake objects, each stored in its own individual container. This artwork suggests ways that inanimate objects are collected and saved because of their association with treasured memories.

Spend some time building a unique memory box—or many! Gather special items to collect and display in unique containers so that cherished memories can be rediscovered every time the box is opened by you and your family.

Things To Consider

SIZE

Memory boxes can be all shapes and sizes—they can even be virtual! Once you begin, you may not want to stop, so consider creating a puzzle of memories in your box! Have fun collecting jewelry and gift boxes and arrange them any way they can fit inside your starting box. Make each item a surprise for anyone who tries to open them!

CONTENT

Objects that stimulate the senses of sight, touch, smell or sound will evoke some of the strongest memories. A good example for a trip to the beach may include: a selection of photos from your trip stored on a USB, a bottle of gritty sand from the beach, a conch shell for listening to the ocean and a spritz of the cologne/ perfume you wore.

LOCATION

Will it be hidden or on view for others to see? Look for a container that fits both the contents and the space where it will be kept. Do you want it to stand out from its environment, or blend in?

The size, content, location and design of your memory box tells your story—
make it a great one!

Designing Your Box

What can you use as a memory box? Anything that can hold memorable items and has a lid or closure will make a perfect memory box. If you have many small items, cardboard or small open containers can be used to create dividers for your objects. Below are some suggested items to help you on your quest.

  • Antique Wooden or Cigar Boxes

  • Shoe, Gift or Packaging Boxes

  • Tin Canisters / Plastic Bins

These are your memories so the box should be unique! Customize as little or a lot depending on your style. If it’s your family’s memory box, then make a game out of it by passing it around after everyone adds their own “touch” to it. Items you may need to personalize your box:

  • Scissors / X-acto Knife

  • Stencils / Cut-out Letters / Scrabble Pieces

  • Tape / Glue

  • Markers / Paint
