Escucha: La Wak’a Habla / Listen: The Wak’a Speaks

Join Juan William Chávez, Kiersten Torrez and Alan Poma for a participatory workshop at 21c Museum Hotel to explore stones as sources of sound and create recorded sounds that will become a part of the Laumeier After Dark Wak'a Garden sound performance by Juan William Chávez and Alan Poma.

Chávez and Poma will lead participants in exploring the sounds and rhythms of river stones through tapping and rubbing. Using small megaphones equipped with recorders, participants will layer these sounds into collective, polyrhythms, creating a shared sonic composition for an improvisational sound performance that gives the stones a voice and the ability to speak.

GUIDED HIKE /
ROCK OUT at Laumeier!

NEW DATE: RESCHEDULED FROM OCTOBER 10. Join us for a guided hike through Laumeier’s trails and creek beds as we explore the Park’s hidden fossil treasures! Led by local rockhound and mineral enthusiast Ryan Gorman, this adventurous walk takes participants off the beaten path to discover ancient seashells and crinoid fossils throughout the Park’s chert rock and limestone formations. Learn about different tools and gadgets rockhounds use to spot rare pieces of quartz or ancient marine fossils while sifting along the creek beds. You might surprise yourself when you make a discovery of your own.

Mud + Merlot: Autumn Leaf Bowls 

Celebrate the colors and textures of fall in this nature-inspired workshop. Create beautiful leaf-imprinted bowls using real leaves gathered from the Park or brought from home. Learn basic handbuilding techniques as you shape your bowl around a mold, then personalize your piece with texture, carving, or autumn-themed underglazes. Whether you go bold and bright or earthy and subtle, your finished bowl will be a one-of-a-kind keepsake of the season. Bring your own wine (or other beverage of your choice); light snacks provided. Pick up your finished piece the following week.
